The Slater + Gordon Burleigh Swim Run Australia Day (26th January) Challenge is a fun community fitness event held in front of the Burleigh Lifeguard Headquarters that is open to everybody from kids as young as 5 years to adults 60yrs+. The morning consists of three events (the Challenge, the Taste Tester & the Young Guns) with all events involving an ocean swim (wade for the young guns) and beach running, with distances that can be achieved by all ages and abilities. All events are individual (solo) based except for ‘The Challenge’ which also offers a team option (of your choice) as well.
This is the 7th Year the event has been run with the event initially being created back in 2011 to bring Fitness, Families and Fun back to Burleigh Beach after we witnessed extremely poor community behaviour (minor riots) in and around Burleigh. Since its creation back in 2011 the event has seen over 4000 competitors take part in this great community fitness event. This year will see the event raise awareness and funds for SLDO ‘save lives donate organs’ www.sldo.com.au with SLDO ambassador and transplant recipient Brett Bullock looking to be involved with the event as an athlete if health permits. Brett has received two kidney transplants and was a great surf lifesaving competitor and a member of the event coordinator (Ty Dowker) training squad many years ago.
One great opportunity that is presented at the Australia Day Swim Run is the for the average Joe and Jen to compete shoulder to shoulder with Olympians e.g Ashleigh Gentle, Emma Moffatt, Courtney Atkinson as well as past elite athletes e.g. Guy Andrews, Mat Rogers etc in a fun fitness event.
With jumping castle, photobooth, give-aways, good times and $500 cash up for grabs for the Open Challenge and team race, it is the prestige of completing the course and creating a healthy, fun filled family Australia Day morning that athletes and spectators love.
The event is run by Burleigh SLSC and coordinated by event coordinator Ty Dowker.
